Dell has announced a refreshed version of its XPS 15 notebook, and it’s looking sharper than ever. That’s because this $1,499 15.6-inch laptop, which goes on sale Oct. 18, packs a touch screen display with an impressive 3,200 x 1,800 resolution. That’s the highest resolution screen you can get on a 15-inch notebook, easily beating out Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (2,880 x 1,800). It’s not just the XPS 15′s screen that’s gotten a boost. The new model also comes with one of Intel’s fourth-generation Haswell processors and Nvidia graphics. We went hands-on with the XPS to see how its latest permutation stacks up.
It’s all about the visuals with the new XPS 15. With its high-resolution, 15.6-inch display, the latest XPS 15 is a feast for the eyes. During our brief time with the notebook, text and photos looked incredibly sharp, while colors appeared rich and vivid. The high-res screen should prove especially helpful for photographers, or anyone who just wants a good looking display.

Inside, the XPS 15 features up to a fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4602HQ processor, 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics chip with 2GB of RAM. Storage options range from a 500GB hard drive paired with a 32GB SSD to a 1TB HDD paired with a 32GB SSD. You can also opt for a 512GB SSD, though that will likely drive up the cost of the notebook. During our time with the XPS 15 there was no noticeable system slowdown or lag, though we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on a review unit before we know how fast the laptop really is.
From a design standpoint, the XPS 15 carries the same chassis styling as the previous generation XPS 15. That means you get the same machined aluminum silver chassis and carbon fiber composite base. That’s not necessarily a negative, though, as the XPS 15 is one of the best looking notebooks around. Dell says the starting weight for a base version of the laptop will come in at 4.4 pounds. According to Dell, the new 15 will also be slightly thinner than its predecessor, 0.3-0.7 inches versus the previous iteration’s 0.91 inches.
Overall, it looks like the XPS 15 has the makings of an exceptional laptop. Considering we gave the previous generation XPS 15 four stars in our review, we have high hopes for this notebook.
