It may be quite some time before we see the Galaxy S5 hit store shelves, but Samsung is already revealing details as to what we can expect. The Korean electronics maker confirmed that its future flagship phones– including the S5– will use 16-megapixel cameras next year.

In addition to increasing the sensor’s megapixel count, the Galaxy phone maker also plans to implement its ISOCELL technology into future smartphone cameras. ISOCELL allows for clearer low-light photography and more accurate color reproduction compared to the BSI (backside illuminated sensor) technology used in smartphones today. Samsung revealed this information along with updates on its plans for flexible smartphone displays at its second annual Analyst Day in Korea.

ISOCELL technology would be a welcome addition to future Samsung flagships, considering the Galaxy S4 fared poorly in low-light conditions during our Smartphone Camera Shootout. When shooting a portrait at night without flash using the Galaxy S4, we could barely see our subject.

The news comes at a time when smartphone manufacturers are competing to revolutionize the photography capabilities of mobile phones.  Apple’s iPhone 5s still uses an 8-megapixel sensor, but it captures larger 1.5-micron pixels and comes with a True Tone Flash for more accurate color depiction. Meanwhile, Nokia bolstered its lineup of camera-centric Windows Phones with the 41-megapixel-toting Lumia 1020 this year.

Samsung hasn’t specified any further information about its Galaxy S5, but rumors suggest it will feature a similar design to the Galaxy Note 3. This means the Galaxy S4 successor could sport the same plastic front and faux leather back as Samsung’s newest phablet. Other rumors traced back to Korean news outlets suggest that the Galaxy S5 could launch in January, although this seems a bit soon considering the S4 is only about nine months old.
